The University of Pretoria’s Department of Student Affairs (DSA) is a multi-faceted support system that addresses the holistic needs of students across their academic, personal and health needs.
At the heart of the DSA's mission is a proactive approach to student development, recognising that university life extends far beyond academic learning. The department is strategically organised into four inter-connected units: the Student Counselling Unit (SCU), Student Health Services (SHS), Student Access and Success (SAS), and Student Governance and Leadership (SGAL).
The Student Counselling Unit offers free and confidential mental health support services to all UP students. Staffed by clinical and counselling psychologists, registered counsellors and supervised interns, the SCU provides individual counselling for personal, academic and social challenges.
Students can access both in-person and online sessions, with support available across all UP campuses. The unit goes beyond traditional counselling, offering career guidance, academic support, peer support groups, and mental health workshops. Through partnerships with organisations such as the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), the unit can provide 24/7 emotional support and a range of resources including mental health podcasts and awareness campaigns.
Complementing mental health services, the Student Health Services (SHS) ensures students' physical well-being through comprehensive medical care. The unit provides a wide array of health services across UP campuses, including medical consultations, injury treatment, free HIV testing, family planning services, and preventative immunisation programmes. Of particular importance is the unit’s voluntary counselling and testing site for HIV/AIDS and free eye testing.
The Student Access and Success (SAS) unit focuses on creating an inclusive and supportive academic environment. Through the Access, Disability, and Inclusion Services (ADIS), the unit ensures that students living with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations and support.
Academic Success Coaches and Peer Advisors provide personalised guidance, offering workshops and consultations on crucial skills such time management, study methods, exam preparation and stress management. The unit also promotes student entrepreneurship and hosts special programmes that foster a sense of community among students and personal growth.
Student Governance and Leadership (SGAL) empowers students to take an active role in university life. The Student Representative Council (SRC) serves as the highest student governance structure, advocating for student interests.
Day Houses, Faculty Houses, and key committees provide platforms for leadership development, cultural engagement, and community involvement. The SGAL unit ensures students have meaningful opportunities to contribute to student life, develop leadership skills, and have their voices heard.
The department's overarching philosophy is encapsulated in their inspiring motto: "FLY@UP" – a commitment to helping every student not just survive, but thrive during their university journey. By providing integrated support services that address mental health, physical well-being, academic success, and personal development, the University of Pretoria creates a supportive ecosystem that prepares students for both academic excellence and life beyond campus.
Students can access these comprehensive services easily, with contact points available via email, phone, and in-person across various campus locations. Whether a student needs counselling, medical care, academic support, or leadership opportunities, the Department of Student Affairs stands ready to support their holistic development.
