Every academic year has very important dates that a student should diarise. Submitting applications for your study programme or residential accommodation are critical calendar dates. By submitting timely applications, you improve the chances of acceptance to study at the University of Pretoria and avoid disappointment.

Once applications open for the academic year, apply as soon as possible. Be sure to share these important dates with your parents or guardians as well.

Application guidelines

Don’t wait until applications open. You can prepare your application documents in advance, such as your ID/passport and Grade 11 final report. Remember to also start planning your student accommodation. If you decide to stay in one of our 29 residences, this must be indicated on your online application. View more about our residences here.

1. Apply online Upload your ID/Passport and final School results (and academic records, if applicable). Indicate your residence preferences during your online application process. Pay your application fee.
2. Check the UP Portal regularly After applying, check the UP Student Portal regularly for your application status and other messages.
3. Accept or decline offer If conditionally admitted to more than one study programme, accept your chosen study programme and decline your second option on the UP Student Portal.
4. Submit your contract You will not be able to register unless your contract has been submitted. Scanned or faxed contracts are not accepted. The contract is available on the UP Student Portal.
5. Pay your initial fees Pay your initial fees. Read more about registration fees. Check your financial accounts on the UP Student Portal.
6. Final admission Your final admission will be updated based on your final NSC or equivalent results. Final admission will be communicated on the UP Student Portal. Your final admission must be confirmed, failure to confirm will result in your admission being revoked.
7. Register Register as soon as possible. Registration in based on capacity; admission does not guarantee registration. Your registration can be cancelled if you do not register within the time frame provided.
8. Attend orientation Orientation Week is a must-attend event for all new students at the beginning of the academic year. After welcoming you, we will help you settle into university life by providing valuable information about module registration, campus life, and academic opportunities.
9. Attend lectures Gain access to vital information, unique insights, and active engagement with your fellow students and professors by attending lectures
