Behind the Smiles: Substance Use and How We Support Students at UP

Posted on July 18, 2025

Substance use and abuse continue to be concerning issues within student communities, affecting academic performance, health and overall well-being. The University of Pretoria (UP) maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards dependence-producing substances on all campuses.

It is essential that we continue to raise awareness of this issue and provide support. Many students turn to substances as a result of social pressures or stress, or to escape any challenges they may be facing. However, substance use can lead to significant health issues and academic challenges, with legal consequences such as disciplinary action and criminal records.

As staff members, you play a crucial role in supporting students to ensure they have access to the right resources, and in identifying students who may be struggling with substance misuse. Key symptoms to look out for include the following:

1. Behavioural changes:

  • Frequent absenteeism or tardiness
  • Sudden decline in academic performance (missed deadlines, poor grades)
  • Loss of motivation and interest in studies
  • Unexplained aggression, irritability or mood swings

2. Physical signs:

  • Slurred speech or incoherent talking
  • Poor personal hygiene and unkempt appearance
  • Bloodshot or glazed eyes
  • Unsteady movements or frequent drowsiness

What staff members can do:

  • Encourage open conversations about responsible choices.
  • Monitor students who show multiple symptoms over time.
  • Maintain confidentiality and approach the student with empathy.
  • Offer support and refer them to support services as stipulated below.

UP offers the following confidential support services:

  • Student Counselling Unit (SCU) provides professional counselling, mental health support and substance abuse intervention. The SCU supports reducing the harm that substances can create. Service requests can be made to [email protected]. For emergencies or after-hours assistance, contact the toll-free UP careline, available 24/7. Call 0800 747 747 or send a “call me” message to 31393 to request a consultation.
  • Student Health Services (SHS) offers medical assistance and advice regarding substance-related health concerns in addition to primary healthcare services. There is at least one facility per campus.Approach any peer-support member at faculties and residences.
  • Academic success coaches are available in every faculty to provide you with study advice.
  • Students can reach out to officers from the Department of Security Services who are available on all campuses. Encourage students to report any concerns related to substance use on campus to any security officer.

For more information on UP’s policies regarding substance use, please refer students to our policy on smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, the Transformation Office or the above-mentioned support services.

If you are unsure who to reach out to, call the numbers on the back of your access card and you will be directed to the relevant support service.

Let’s work together to co-create a safe, supportive and responsible campus environment for all.
