Embarking on your university journey is more than just a step towards earning a degree; it's a transformative experience that encompasses academics, personal growth, networking, and unforgettable memories. At the University of Pretoria (UP), this journey isn't just about lectures and exams – it's about crafting a life-changing adventure. Choosing UP means embracing an extraordinary chapter of your life, marked by unwavering support, diverse opportunities and a commitment to your success.

UP is committed to providing comprehensive support to its students, ensuring their success and well-being throughout their academic journey. With a dedicated student support system, the University offers a wide range of services to help students thrive. From academic advising and career guidance to counselling and health services, UP is invested in nurturing the holistic development of its students. This support extends to both local and international students, making UP a welcoming and inclusive institution where every student can reach their full potential.

UP values diversity and fosters a sense of belonging among its student community. “We have various student organisations, clubs and cultural activities that enable students to connect, engage, and make the most of their university experience,” says Acting Vice-Principal for Student Life Professor Flavia Senkubuge.

As a UP student you will experience comprehensive support on your academic path. The FLY@UP programme helps you graduate in the minimum time, enabling you to become a contributor to the economy, while FLYHigher@UP boosts postgraduate success. Through various initiatives, students will engage with real-world work and social settings, with the support of seamless campus connectivity via high-speed networks. These efforts have significantly contributed to UP’s remarkable 93% examination pass rate for full-time undergraduate students.

Our Student Counselling Unit provides an array of mental health services, both in-person and online, to ensure comprehensive support for your well-being during what can be a challenging university experience.

Your emotional and physical health are vital to your success, and we are fully committed to providing the care and resources you need. We prioritise your safety while on campus, implementing strong security measures to allow you to concentrate on your studies without any worries. Our campuses offer a secure space for your learning and personal development, with beautiful gardens to explore and enjoy when you have the opportunity.

Student accommodation, faculty houses and mentorship initiatives at UP serve as a welcoming and supportive community, offering a nurturing environment for both your academic and personal growth. Our dedicated mentors are available to assist you in navigating your academic journey seamlessly.

Academic and personal excellence

Significantly, embracing respect, kindness, and human rights is central to UP's values. To address discrimination and gender-based violence (GBV), we've established #SpeakOutUP offices on all campuses, in line with our Anti-Discrimination Policy. As part of the University of Pretoria's Transformation Office, #SpeakOutUP coordinates various initiatives to combat discrimination, GBV and sexual harassment. These offices, located at the Hatfield and Onderstepoort campuses, are staffed by trained student peer counsellors who offer support, guidance and referrals for GBV cases. Since the Transformation Office may not be accessible at all campuses, these services ensure that no one is left without assistance or support.

“At the University of Pretoria, we are dedicated to empowering our students for academic and personal excellence,” Prof Senkubuge further emphasises.

UP prioritises entrepreneurship and takes pride in offering a free online entrepreneurship course, the Entrepreneurship Professional Online Development (POD), along with its subsequent phases: Start_UP, Link_UP, and Grow_UP. These programmes equip candidates with the necessary tools, skills, and support to embark on entrepreneurial journeys. In the Start_UP phase, you'll refine your business ideas with experienced business managers to avoid potential pitfalls. Regardless of your academic background, there are entrepreneurial opportunities for self-employment in every field, especially in the context of the fourth industrial revolution and artificial intelligence. To meet changing employer expectations, we have the Ready for Work programme, designed for young adults and recent graduates. It provides essential workplace skills, career advice, and guidance to enhance your employability. This holistic approach has yielded impressive results, with 97% of graduates finding employment within six months of completing their studies.

“Beyond academics, we prioritise holistic development through our vibrant array of student development activities encompassing culture, sports, leadership opportunities, and faculty houses. These platforms are tailored to nurture your talents, passions, and leadership abilities, whether you're an aspiring athlete, artist or future leader,” says Prof Senkubuge.

At UP we offer you the tools and support you need to ensure that you are able to live THE UP WAY and make today matter, throughout your student journey.
