The University of Pretoria (UP) recently signed partnership agreements with Wuhan Polytechnic University and the Hubei University of Technology in China, marking a significant milestone in international collaboration. These agreements aim to advance joint research and development initiatives, and enhance China and Africa’s innovation cooperation, underscoring UP’s commitment to global academic and technological progress.

Professor Themba Mosia, who was the Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UP at the time, hosted a high-level meeting, which was attended by delegates from the Science and Technology Department of Hubei Province, representatives from the Department of Science and Technology of Hubei Province, and partner universities. The meeting focused on identifying potential collaborative activities, formalising partnerships and strengthening existing collaborations between the countries and their higher education institutions.

Additionally, a memorandum of cooperation was signed to advance scientific research between the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Hubei University of Technology and the School of Engineering within UP’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT). This agreement aims to fully exploit collaboration opportunities and maximise mutual benefits for both institutions.

“By finalising these agreements, we are confident that they will not only enhance the China-Africa innovation partnership, but also strengthen the ties between Hubei Province and the University of Pretoria,” Prof Mosia said. “In South Africa, UP is a leader in international networks and collaborations, reflecting our serious commitment to these partnerships. We believe our partners share this dedication, as evidenced by our nearly two decades of collaboration. On behalf of the EBIT Faculty, we are deeply grateful for this partnership and the joint projects aimed at addressing global challenges. These collaborations hold great promise, particularly in advancing critical fields such as renewable energy and power grid safety technologies.”

Zhang Xiaoxing, Dean of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Hubei University of Technology, expressed pride in being part of such a forward-looking partnership. He highlighted that this collaboration aims to tackle global challenges and drive innovation, with the goal of making a meaningful impact on people’s lives, societies and the world at large.

“Professor Mosia highlighted that UP is very strategic about its partnerships, and we are honoured to be included as their partners for the future,” added Dong Shijie, President of Wuhan Polytechnic University. “Wuhan Polytechnic University has established relationships across Europe, America, Australia and Southeast Asia, making the University of Pretoria our first collaboration point on the African continent. Before visiting South Africa, I thoroughly researched UP’s collaborations, particularly in the engineering field, and I am impressed by its contributions, position and development. While our strengths in agriculture and food production are notable, I believe our other faculties are also well suited for collaboration with UP’s departments. We recognise that for research-focused universities, international collaboration is essential. It is crucial for our students and staff to engage globally and work together on research and innovation.”
