The Department of Historical and Heritage Studies (DHHS) at the University of Pretoria (UP) celebrated its top-performing students at the annual Departmental Award Ceremony, held on 15 May 2025. Under the theme ‘Seize Tomorrow’, a record-breaking 24 students received accolades for their achievements during the 2024 academic year.
The prestigious event was attended by proud students, parents and guardians, alongside notable academics including Professor Kevin Thomas, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Professor Zitha Mokomane, Deputy Dean of Teaching and Learning; and Professor Karen Harris, Head of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies.
“Today is a day where we appreciate the quality of the students that we have, and this is a stepping stone to seize tomorrow,” said Dr Karina Sevenhuysen, Senior Lecturer in the DHHS, who organised the ceremony.
In his address, Prof Thomas acknowledged the exemplary work demonstrated by the students: “The mindfulness of life is in the moment, and this day is one on which you should reflect on your excellent academic performance.”
Louisa Jordaan, a master’s candidate in history who received the award for Best Honours Research Report, was filled with joy as she reflected on her achievement. “This award represents countless hours of dedication and passion for our heritage,” she said. “I am deeply grateful to my parents and the department for their unwavering support throughout my academic journey.”
Aiden Schutte, who received an impressive five awards (see full list below), said, “I am truly honoured to be recognised in this way. My success would not have been possible without the guidance of my supervisor, the encouragement of my parents, and the exceptional academic environment created by the department that consistently brings out the best in me.”
As the ceremony drew to a close Prof Harris delivered heartfelt words of appreciation to all who contributed to the department’s success. “The achievements we celebrate today reflect not only the exceptional dedication of our students, but also the collaborative spirit that defines our academic community,” she said. “I extend my sincere gratitude to Dr Karina Sevenhuysen, our academic and administrative staff, specifically Ms Zim Tsotso and Naz Goolam-Mahomed, within the department for their tireless commitment to excellence in teaching and research. To the parents who have provided unwavering support to these young scholars: Your contribution to their success cannot be overstated.”
Prof Harris also acknowledged the vital partnerships that enrich the department’s academic offerings. “Our collaborations with UP Archives, UP Campus Tours, UP Museums, Education Innovation, and the Department of Library Services have created unparalleled learning opportunities for our students. These partnerships have allowed our students to engage with history and heritage in meaningful and practical ways, preparing them for impactful careers in their chosen fields.”
The ceremony concluded with a reception at which students, parents, guardians and faculty members celebrated the award recipients, reinforcing the department’s commitment to academic excellence and its vision of equipping students to “seize tomorrow” through a deep understanding of our shared past.
