The University of Pretoria (UP) prides itself on providing support to students through the implementation of various initiatives, one of the most successful being the Student Nutrition and Progress Programme (SNAPP), which provides financially dependent students with meal allowances and food parcels . In line with this programme, Roman’s Pizza and non-profit company Hot Cares have donated almost R70 000 to support seven students who face food insecurity.
“There is no small or big donation; we are thankful for every contribution – it really makes a difference in the lives of those students that need it,” said Dr Willem Jorissen, Deputy-Director of Student Affairs at UP. “Every drop in the river makes the river flow.”
Students who qualify for the programme are provided with food parcels – which include non-perishable food items that comply with nutritional requirements – or meal credits. They receive meal credits via a preloaded card which has a daily spending limit and with which they can purchase nutritious food at designated outlets. This system allows students to purchase meals discreetly.
By supporting the nutritional needs of students, the SNAPP programme alleviates the emotional stress that arises among those who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. SNAPP also seeks to address the potential stigma that students in need may face by providing them with food parcels and meal credits in an inconspicuous way, thus allowing them to maintain their self-esteem and dignity. Additionally, by giving them meal credits with a spending limit, students have to ensure that they manage their money in a responsible way, thus providing them with a valuable life skill.
According to a representative from Roman’s Pizza, the company’s first store was located in Hatfield, which is why it has a long-standing relationship with the UP community. “Students that have attended this institution have always been a support,” they said. “We have been part of this community from the beginning – that was 30 years ago.”
Through their donation, Roman’s Pizza has invested in the future of UP students, and is helping to foster a sense of continued and multi-generational support among the UP community.
The nutritional support provided by SNAPP and its donors allows students to focus on their academic pursuits to create a brighter future for themselves.
