UP staff members reap over R41 million in tuition fee rebates

Posted on November 01, 2024

The University of Pretoria (UP) is proud to announce that its staff members have collectively saved an impressive R41.6 million in tuition fee rebates and other developmental learning programmes in 2024. This substantial figure highlights UP’s dedication to supporting not only the professional growth of its employees, but also the educational aspirations of their dependants.

As a leading institution in a highly competitive education landscape, UP encourages its employees to pursue continuous development and learning, enabling them to stay updated on trends and the evolving needs of students. Understanding the profound impact that education has across generations, the University is committed to extending tuition rebates to its employees and their families. This initiative has helped employees cover their own educational expenses and that of their dependants, ultimately reducing financial pressures and fostering a learning-friendly environment for employees and students alike.

“Our employees are an invaluable resource to the sustainability of the University’s core business,” said Sithembile Mbuyisa, Director of Human Resources. “When they are educated and skilled, the institution is able to harness intellectual value that’s then shared with our clients – the students who leave UP equipped with knowledge and skills. We’ve also seen how our professional services staff enable the University’s operations for the entire student community.”

The developmental and learning programmes are inclusive, benefitting full-time, temporary and permanent employees as well as Senate members. Notably, dependants of retired and deceased staff members also continue to benefit, demonstrating UP’s commitment to educational support over the long term. This initiative serves as a testament to UP’s dedication to enriching South Africa’s educational ecosystem while providing financial relief.

“Given the tough global economic climate, we are pleased that UP is able to cushion both its current and retired employees by easing their financial burden,” said Naeem Moolla, Director of Finance at UP.

Staff members who are interested in formal studies outside of UP are encouraged to apply for a bursary by 15 November 2024.

Beyond educational rebates, UP employees can also enjoy discounts through the UP Online Mall. By simply visiting the ‘Staff Mall’ tile on the portal, employees can subscribe and shop for discounted items, with proceeds benefitting the student financial aid programme.

Through these initiatives, UP remains committed to championing educational growth and providing a supportive learning environment for its community.
