The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria is proud to announce the reappointment of Professor Tivani Mashamba-Thompson, Deputy Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies, to the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) Board as a Council on Higher Education representative. This reappointment by Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi reflects Professor Mashamba-Thompson's outstanding contributions to healthcare service delivery in South Africa and herleadership in advancing access to high-quality diagnostic services.
Effective from 19 October 2024, Professor Mashamba-Thompson will continue her three-year term on the NHLS Board, where she will also serve as Chairperson of the Research and Innovation Sub-Committee. Her extensive expertise in diagnostics, healthcare research, and leadership will play a key role in shaping the NHLS' strategy to address the country’s evolving health challenges.
A major focus of Professor Mashamba-Thompson’s work has been improving access to quality diagnostic services, particularly in underserved communities through supporting research and innovation. Through her research group at University of Pretoria, REASSURED-d@UP, she has been a driving force in promoting the local development and implementation of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. This work aligns with her role on the NHLS Board, reinforcing the NHLS' leadership in scaling up POC diagnostic services across South Africa.
" I am deeply honoured to continue serving on the NHLS Board and contributing to the critical task of strengthening our national healthcare system", said Professor Mashamba-Thompson. I look forward to continuing our efforts to ensure that South Africans, regardless of their economic status or geographic location, have access to quality diagnostic services".
As a key member of the NHLS Board, Professor Mashamba-Thompson remains committed to enhancing laboratory services, which are essential to disease diagnosis and treatment across the country. Her reappointment underscores the critical role that academic and healthcare leaders play in shaping the future of public health in South Africa.
