UP’s Department of Financial Management honoured at CIMA Excellence Awards

Posted on December 22, 2022

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants, awarded the Department of Financial Management at the University of Pretoria (UP) – under its CIMA Academic Partner Excellence Award – the CGMA Campus of the Year 2022 Award at the third edition of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and CIMA Excellence Awards held virtually on 9 December 2022.

UP was honoured for having the second-highest number of CIMA exams taken over 12 months per university campus in Africa with a pass rate above the regional average. The annual AICPA & CIMA Excellence Awards recognise educational institutions and individuals across the globe who work tirelessly to support candidates through their journey towards becoming Chartered Global Management Accountants (CGMA) and shape the future of the global accounting and finance profession.

CIMA works closely with employers and sponsors, leading cutting-edge research, continuously updating its professional qualification and professional experience requirements to ensure it remains the employers’ choice when recruiting financially trained business leaders.

Dr Zack Enslin, a senior lecturer in the Department of Financial Management, won the CIMA Research Excellence Award for research published from his PhD in a quality journal. This award recognises researchers and research teams that have conducted landmark research efforts on a subject or topic related to CIMA’s CGMA syllabus such as accounting, digital finance, strategy and more. Dr Enslin’s award-winning research, co-authored with Professors John Hall and Elda du Toit, investigated the level and trend of business decision-making involvement of management accountants. The research found that 47% of management accountants in more traditional management accounting positions are involved in business decision-making supporting the extension of the management accounting syllabi to be more business-oriented.

Prof Hall, Head of the Department of Financial Management, said the recognition from CIMA was the result of the hard work and commitment of academics in his department.

“The recognition from CIMA affirms our commitment to excellence and aligning our teaching practices to global standards for the benefit of our students. These awards would not be possible without the sheer dedication of all staff members in the Department of Financial Management who are exposing our students to global trends and standards in the finance and accounting professions,” he said.

This year, more than 650 applications and nominations from educational institutions and individuals were submitted for consideration in four categories, namely: Teaching Excellence Award, Research Excellence Award, Campus Culture Excellence Award and Employability Excellence Award. A central award committee selected winners for the Global Excellence Award and the CGMA Campus of the Year Award based on exam performance in 2021 and 2022.

Speaking at the awards, Andrew Harding, Chief Executive – Management Accounting at the Association of International Certified Professionals Accountants, representing AICPA and CIMA, said:

“We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of our academic partners, tuition providers and young accounting talents for the third year running. Our award winners and nominees should be an inspiration to us all to further our efforts to grow, nurture and empower future accounting, finance and business leaders across the globe. Congratulations to all of you on your success, and for getting the recognition you deserve.”
