UP Museums mark International Museum Day

Posted on May 17, 2017

International Museum Day is celebrated annually on 18 of May. This day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 to create public awareness of the role museums play in the development of society. The popularity of International Museum Day has been steadily growing. Last year, over 35 000 museums in 145 different countries participated in and promoted this important event. The theme chosen by ICOM for 2017 is 'Museums and contested histories: saying the unspeakable in museums'.

UP Arts, the department responsible for the UP Museums, hopes to create greater awareness during International Museum Week from 15 to 19 May. As usual, the Mapungubwe collection is open, free of charge, Monday to Friday from 08:00–16:00. Visitors are encouraged to view the famous gold rhino, one of the most contested archaeological artefacts in South Africa. Plan your own visit and explore the other museum collections at your leisure, or book a specialised tour.  For further information and to arrange for access to the Hatfield Campus of the University of Pretoria, please contact us via email or telephone. Secure paid parking is available at the Engineering Building 3 Parkade, accessible from the University Road Entrance.
