Welcome to the School of Arts at the University of Pretoria

The University of Pretoria’s School of the Arts is a dynamic and inclusive academic hub dedicated to nurturing South Africa’s most distinguished postgraduate researchers, innovative creative talent, and accomplished performing artists.

Our mission is to provide access and opportunity to talented students from all communities, upholding the highest standards of excellence and creativity. Through diverse disciplines, we foster critical thinking, cultural engagement, and artistic innovation — equipping graduates to contribute locally and globally.

The School of the Arts at the UP is a comprehensive School offering undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes in the visual and performing arts, broadly housed under Music, Drama, and Visual Arts.

Our creative offering to the UP community and the public include performances, productions and exhibitions in which the drama, music and visual art students and staff collaborate in our state of the art concert halls, theatres and galleries. Please also visit the websites of the Uvuwa Cultural Ensemble, UP Camerata Choir and UP Symphony Orchestra. In these ensembles, students studying in the School of the Arts collaborate with talented students studying in all the other UP faculties.

Message from the Head of School

In the University of Pretoria's School of the Arts, undergraduate students can opt to specialise in Fine Arts (including sculpture, photography, printmaking, drawing, painting, concept art and curating), Information Design (design thinking across broad outcomes) or Visual Studies (critical thinking, content creation, art writing). Postgraduate students can continue in any of these streams, or specialise in Heritage Conservation — the only programme of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.
