Recently, a small uproar erupted over the use of Fanie Viljoen's novel Underworld as prescribed work for matriculants. As the only prescribed work for next year, the question is being asked if the thin novel is really appropriate for grade 12 learners. Prof Willie Burger, from the University of Pretoria's Department of Afrikaans, and former teacher Irene Raath spoke about the controversial choice of this prescribed work on the KykNet program Prontuit.
