PRETORIA – The University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra (UPSO) recently hosted the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) for a powerful cultural exchange.
At a time when global headlines are dominated by political tensions between South Africa and the USA, the University of Pretoria (UP) continues to champion the values of inclusivity, academic diversity and international collaboration.
This commitment was brought to life when the UMSO opened its five-concert South African tour with a powerful performance at the Aula Theatre at UP’s Hatfield Campus. The concert, held in front of a sold-out audience, was not just a musical event – it was a celebration of unity, shared culture and the transformative potential of global academic partnerships.
The programme featured the Negro Folk Symphony by African-American composer William Levi Dawson – a profound and often overlooked work influenced by African musical traditions and spirituals. Composed in 1932, Dawson’s symphony resonated deeply with the South African audience, as conductor Kenneth Kiesler and the orchestra delivered a stirring, high-energy performance.
While the music itself was spectacular, the most unforgettable moment of the evening came when the orchestra set down their instruments and began to sing the Xhosa hymn Bawo Thixo Somandla. Swaying and gesturing in time with the song, the 100-member ensemble captivated the audience, creating a shared emotional experience that transcended language and nationality.
“How moving it is to be all together, when our governments are not,” Kiesler remarked during a joint rehearsal between the UMSO and UPSO.
This collaboration is a shining example of how UP is rooted in Africa but globally connected. UP continues to develop strategic partnerships that promote cultural understanding, academic innovation and human connection.
“Our diverse academic curriculum and inclusive campus culture remain central to our mission. Whether through collaborative performances, international exchanges, or cross-continental research, UP is committed to preparing graduates who are globally minded and socially conscious,” concluded Ms Zamile Mzizi-Khuzwayo, UPSO Coordinator.
The UMSO also performed in Soweto and Cape Town.
