UP CANSA Shavathon 2011 a huge success!

Posted on April 14, 2011

Prinshof Campus did not stay behind – they gave their ‘heads up’ and raised R 4 500 by spraying and (mostly) shaving. Both campuses hosted the event for the first time, making the achievement of raising R 7 250 all the more significant. The collaborative effort of the five events on four campuses has paid off - Tuks is proud to hand over the total amount of nearly R 41 000 to CANSA Pretoria.

UP staff and students are making a difference by not only showing solidarity to cancer survivors but by engaging in their communities. An Education student on the Groenkloof Campus illustrated this notion when he was notified by his doctor ten minutes prior to the event that his ten year battle with cancer was finally something of the past. He was, understandably, overjoyed and said that he was proud to support a Shavathon event on his own campus.

Cups and Cones (Memory Lane is in the process of rebranding their stores to Cups and Cones) is sponsoring ice-creams to the student group (Residence / Day House / Faculty House) and staff unit that best supports this initiative. The competition was very tough but there has to be a winner. Congratulations to Onderstepoort Faculty House, OPVSC, who ‘revamped’ 169 heads! Law House and Commercii were wonderful Shavathon supporters as well and came second and third, respectively.

We would like to thank Vodacom again for their generous contribution – they’ve donated all the necessary disposable items such as wet wipes, latex gloves and black bags as well as T-shirts for the volunteers. The Shavathon events would not have been a success without their involvement!

The organisers of the event, Mia Badenhorst (Student Development Division) and Anneke Bothma (Peak Performance Consulting), would like to thank staff members of CANSA Pretoria for their involvement and support. And a huge thank you to all Tukkies – staff, students and volunteers who have showed their true colours by taking part in the third UP CANSA Shavathon.

Tuks of Niks indeed!
