Supporting students with disabilities at the University of Pretoria: A guide to ADIS

Posted on December 12, 2024

The University of Pretoria (UP) is committed to creating an inclusive academic environment for all students, including those with disabilities. The Access, Disability and Inclusion Services (ADIS) unit plays a significant role in helping students with disabilities navigate university life. ADIS offers a range of services, resources and accommodations designed to empower students to succeed academically and socially.

ADIS provides comprehensive assistance to students who need academic accommodations and reasonable concessions. The unit works with students who may have a history of heavy reliance on human support, helping them acquire new skills and utilise assistive technologies to foster independence. This process equips students with the tools necessary to graduate as confident, capable and employable candidates. Some of the key services provided by ADIS include:

  • Application assistance for academic accommodations and concessions.
  • Basic training in assistive technologies for students with different disabilities.
  • Advocacy for student rights and inclusive academic practices at UP.
  • Support for lecturers in creating accessible learning environments.

ADIS supports students with a wide range of disabilities, from physical and sensory impairments to learning disabilities and mental health challenges. The unit uses a human-centred approach to tailor services based on each student's individual needs and preferences. ADIS recognises that every student is unique, and even individuals with similar disabilities may have different requirements for support.

To access services from ADIS, students must first register by visiting the ADIS office to request a consultation. During this process, students will be asked to provide medical reports from qualified professionals who can diagnose and treat the condition for support is required. If students do not have the necessary documentation, ADIS may offer screening services and refer them to appropriate specialists. Students are also encouraged to bring documents from previous educational institutions that outline any accommodations or concessions they have received. Once the consultation is complete, ADIS will identify the most suitable support for the student and begin the process of issuing academic accommodations or concessions.

ADIS has a computer lab and various study rooms available to our students, equipped with assistive technologies and specialised software. In collaboration with the department hosting the Academic Information Management (AIM) modules, ADIS offers lecture space and additional training for blind students who require instruction through non-visual means and using screen-reading software.

Additionally, ADIS provides motivation to funders such as NSFAS to secure funding for students to purchase their own technologies, as these will remain useful even after graduation from UP.

While ADIS focuses primarily on academic support and accommodations, it works closely with the Student Counselling Unit (SCU) to provide emotional and psychological assistance to students with disabilities. This collaboration ensures that students have access to the necessary mental health resources to thrive both academically and personally.

For students with disabilities who are thinking of attending UP, ADIS recommends contacting the unit as early as possible, ideally once academic registration is complete. Early engagement ensures that ADIS can assess students' needs and begin providing the necessary accommodations and support services from the start of their university journey.

The Access, Disability and Inclusion Services unit at UP plays a critical role in ensuring that students with disabilities have the support they need to succeed. From personalised academic accommodations to assistive technology and disability awareness programmes, ADIS is dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment for all students. By registering early and working closely with ADIS, students can fully utilise the resources and services available to them, empowering them to thrive at the University of Pretoria and beyond.
