New TuksRag Queen is crowned

Posted on February 25, 2011

The first princess is Danielle Roodt (22), a third-year BSc Genetics student who was born and bred in Pretoria. The third princess is a third-year BCom LLB student, Melissa Wicht (20), who comes from Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. She was also named Miss Personality at the competition.

The crowning of this year’s TuksRag Queen is part of the annual Rag Week festivities at the University of Pretoria, and the new Rag Queen and her princesses will be working on various community projects.

Last year’s TuksRag Queen is Azel van Zyl, a Bachelor of Law student at the University of Pretoria.

According to Ivannih Nel, TuksRag Executive Committee Member - Rag Debutantes, the Rag Debutantes Crowning programme is an initiative started by TuksRag to encourage more student involvement in local charity organizations.

“The programme is a valuable source of revenue for TuksRag. The money which is raised by these debutants is paid out towards the charities which the TuksRag supports,” said Nel.

There has been a considerable contribution made over the previous years to worthy causes such as the poly clinic, soup kitchens for the elderly, clothes for homeless and needy children. More than R4 million was donated to charity organisations in the past two years, and various community projects have also been helped to sustain themselves.
