Suggestion of Nazi photographic pose not aligned with the University Of Pretoria's institutional values

Posted on August 01, 2011

The University’s Registrar, Prof Niek Grové, has in the meantime had talks with the Station Manager of TuksFM, who has confirmed that there was never any malicious intent with the placing of the initial content on the blog. UP finds it regrettable that the photographic pose that was proposed is one that offends many people and is not aligned with the University’s institutional values.

The blog content was removed immediately when complaints were received. An explanation of intent was made on air. A media statement about the incident was issued by the University on the morning of Friday 29 July 2011.

A letter by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies voicing their concern and disappointment was also sent to UP. Prof Grové has, on behalf of the University, apologised to them. The apology is also extended to all other individuals who are directly affected or offended by this unfortunate incident and the thoughtless conduct of the students involved.
