UP ARTS presents: KAROO KATEDRAAL - A debut musical production from the recent ABSA KKNK.

Posted on May 11, 2011

Already in the 18th century, Mozart described the pipe-organ as the “king of instruments”. In Karoo Katedraal, the famous organist Ockie Vermeulen explores the versatility of this magnificent instrument in a variety of musical styles including amongst others classical, jazz, contemporary and even rock.

In Karoo Katedraal  Ockie joins forces with musical legend Christa Steyn (piano), and with the help of Lizelle le Roux (violin), Wiehahn Francke (vocals), Christi-Louise Swanepoel (bass) and JP van Schalkwyk (percussion), they exploit the possibilities of one of the world’s oldest instruments, the pipe-organ, while still respecting the inherent qualities of the instrument.

Karoo Katedraal
is a unique production and pioneering work: it knows no equal in South Africa. The production aims to widen borders and to introduce the organ to a greater audience. The variety of musical styles (classical, jazz, contemporary and rock) included in the production showcases the versatility of artists and instrument alike.

The performance is presented by UP Arts on Sunday 15 May at 15:00 in the Musaion on the UP campus. Tickets cost R100.00 per person, and bookings can be done through Computicket.
