Donvé Deacon was the overall Oxford University Press competition winner with her story Harry the Hadeda. The story is about why Hadedas make so much noise. This initiative would not have been possible if it were not for Dr Ina Joubert. She works is collaboration with Oxford University Press as the story writing assignment forms part of her JGL 220 module. Donvé was inspired to write about a truly South African topic and to take every opportunity to read it to young children. In the following year she had the opportunity to complete her teaching practical at a school in New York City. Harry the Hadeda of course went with. She presented a lesson about the book to the class, who sat in wonder thinking about this noisy South African bird. In the near future, Donvé hopes to write another book about Harry as it proved to be both popular in South Africa and abroad.
