Grade 9 Open Day informative and fun

Posted on August 11, 2011

More than 200 learners from 12 schools, including schools from Mamelodi, Hoërskool Waterkloof and Cornwall College attended this informative day on 29 July this year.

The activities kick-off with the Dean of the Faculty, Prof Anton Ströh welcoming the learners and teachers to the University. He emphasised the importance of a choosing the right subjects in order to have a fulfilling career and expressed the hope that all learners present would become possible Tukkie students.

Mr Petrus Lombard from the JuniorTukkie programme showed a DVD to the learners and explained how the programme works and the benefits of being a JuniorTukkie. Ms Samantha Pretorius, a lecturer in the Department of Insurance and Actuarial Science, gave an overview of the different study programmes and the entry requirements for the respective degrees in the Faculty.

Mrs Marianne van der Laarse from the Produce Marketing Association Foundation also encouraged the learners with her enthusiastic presentation to consider a career in the agriculture sector and highlighted the many scare skills currently in this sector. All the different departments from the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences exhibited and learners had the opportunity to browse through the exhibition and gather some more in-depth knowledge of the different departments.

The highlight of the day was the science show by Mr Eddie Jansen, a retired science subject advisor who illustrated that science can be fun. He nearly ‘blowed’ the learners away with all his interesting experiments. The day’s activities were concluded by a free lunch sponsored by the Faculty, prepared by the students of the Department of Consumer Science.

Mrs Marié Venter, Senior Public Relations Practitioner in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and organiser of the Grade 9 Open Day, says this second Grade 9 Faculty Open Day was even more successful than the first one and the positive feedback from both learners and teachers confirmed that.
