Students and academics from 56 African universities are participating in this competition at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town this week, resulting in it being the largest gathering on the continent of law students and academics.

The competition aims to bring together human rights lawyers and law students from every corner of the African continent and aspires to create awareness and informed individuals that will use their skills and knowledge to the betterment of the continent.

The 22nd African Human Rights Moot Court Competition officially kicked off on Sunday 1 September 2013. Participants from all over Africa made the journey to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport and eventually to Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa.

The competition officially started on Monday 2 September 2013 when teams registered and participants were briefed. At the opening ceremony, the participants, volunteers and faculty representatives were addressed by the Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, the Honourable Patricia De Lille.
