This time period in the University of Pretoria’s history was characterised by state support and a long term growth trajectory. Given the context of apartheid and the unequal allocation of resources, the University of Pretoria was in the position to rapidly expand its physical environment and infrastructure to accommodate the growth in the number of students. Ironically, the benefit of the unequal allocation of resources which the apartheid government granted (which sought to benefit a few students) has had the opposite effect in contemporary, post-democracy South Africa since students from all walks of life now benefit from the University of Pretoria which increases access to education for all students and which in turn has a positive impact in transforming South African communities by producing skilled graduates who are able to contribute to the economy in various ways.

Historic Context
This period is characterized by the physical growth and expansion of the University of Pretoria. Between 1948 and 1982 student numbers doubled. This increase in student numbers necessitated the physical expansion of the campus and new buildings appeared in rapid succession and the campus grew eastward.
With the growing number of students, student activities flourished with events such as Rag, Intervarsity and Spring Day being strongly supported. Parades through the streets of Pretoria, with drum majorettes and beauty queens, added an element of fun and colour to city life.
