UP Archives

Old Arts 1911

The University of Pretoria Archives serves as the custodian of the institution’s rich history, preserving over a century of records from all sectors of the University and associated communities. As the memory bank of the University, we support its teaching, research, and community service mission while reflecting the spirit of UP.

The UPA offers access to a diverse collection of primary source materials, including administrative records, yearbooks, graduation programs, an expansive photographic archive, and UP publications. Our academic collections include records of the South African Art Archives, the Transvaal Education Department, and the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS, and Gender.

As a partner in information governance, the UPA provides guidance on record retention and destruction while assisting the University’s staff, students, and researchers with archival materials for publications, exhibitions, and research projects.

The Archives also actively supports student development through work-integrated learning opportunities, equipping students with valuable skills and practical experience.

The Archives welcomes researchers to its reading rooms on the Hatfield and Groenkloof campuses.   Alternatively, visit the Collections section on the main page of UP Archives for an overview of the diverse information sources or explore intriguing historical snippets of campus life in our  'Day in the Life' news feature.
