Behind-the-scenes of data management excellence at TuksSport

Posted on May 09, 2025

In the bustling environment of TuksSport at the University of Pretoria (UP), Phina Sokho is an example of how behind-the-scenes excellence creates positive change. Set to receive an Advanced Diploma in Administrative Information Management on 15 May, Sokho bridges the worlds of data management and student support.

With a decade of experience in project management and administration, Sokho serves as the administrative and database officer at TuksSport, managing data systems that support university operations.

“I am scared of poverty. and that gave me a strong sense of self-discipline and time management,” she says. “It gave me the ability to balance academic responsibilities with professional commitments at UP. I believe education is a step to combat poverty, not just financially, but also mentally – your perceived thoughts have a great impact on your life decisions."

This philosophy guides her approach to both her studies and professional responsibilities. While pursuing a postgraduate diploma, Sokho has simultaneously strengthened TuksSport’s administrative infrastructure, streamlining processes that support athlete performance and student well-being.

“I was inspired to work with TuksSport because of its reputation for excellence in student development, discipline and holistic support. I saw it as a space where I could apply my skills in administrative information management in a dynamic, student-focused environment, while contributing to something greater than just operational tasks.”

Her contributions include improving data management and athlete information tracking systems, streamlining registration processes, and improving communication between sport clubs and coordinators.

Sokho’s time at TuksSport has taught her valuable lessons about leadership.

“One of the most unexpected lessons I’ve learned about leadership through my position at TuksSport is that influence doesn't always come from authority – it often comes from consistency, empathy and trust,” she says.

Looking ahead, Sokho aims to advance as a strategic leader in administrative information management, focusing on optimising data-driven decision-making in higher education. Her goal is to occupy a senior role where she can influence policy and drive innovation in administrative systems.
