One signature, one life: OP-PGSA's stem cell donor drive sparks hope

Posted on May 06, 2025

Annually, approximately 4,000 new cases of blood disorders and blood cancers are reported in South Africa — each one a life forever changed. For many of these patients, a stem cell transplant is their only hope for survival.

At the end of March 2025, the Onderstepoort Postgraduate Student Association (PGSA) of the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science brought new hope with the launch of a stem cell donor drive. Partnering with DKMS Africa — an international nonprofit bone marrow donor organisation also based in South Africa — the PGSA set out to make a life-saving difference.

The donor drive fostered a powerful sense of unity among the campus community. Students, staff, and volunteers alike came together, not just to sign up, but to stand for a cause larger than themselves.
This event transcended the bounds of a typical campaign, sparking a movement of compassion and awareness. By the end of the day, 78 new donors had joined the global stem cell registry — 78 potential lifelines for patients still searching for a match.

More than just tables and sign-up forms, the drive offered heartfelt conversations, informative sessions, and personal stories from those who’ve seen the impact of stem cell transplants first-hand. Many first-time participants were surprised to learn how underrepresented their own native groups are in global registries — making local drives like this not only valuable but vital.

It was deeply inspiring to witness students and staff come together for such an important cause. Each new registration represents a second chance at life. The atmosphere on campus was electric with purpose and hope.

The OP-PGSA plans to continue hosting similar events, expanding its efforts to raise awareness and grow a more representative donor base in South Africa. This successful drive is just the beginning of a broader campaign to create change — and save lives.

The OP-PGSA extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who registered and to DKMS Africa for their partnership. Together, we celebrate the hope of 78 new chances — 78 more reasons to believe in the power of community.
