UP's Prof Markotter receives NRF B1 rating for global impact in virology

Congratulations to Professor Wanda Markotter on being awarded a B1 rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF) — a recognition of her international standing and exceptional contributions to science.

Prof Markotter, a renowned virologist and Director of the Centre for Viral Zoonoses in the Department of Medical Virology and Interim Director of the Future Africa Platform at the University of Pretoria. Her work in disease ecology — particularly her transdisciplinary research on bat species across South Africa and the African continent — continues to shape global understanding of viral spillovers and emerging zoonotic diseases.

Her work is a reminder of how science can help us find real solutions to some of the world’s biggest health challenges. With more than 100 scientific publications, several book chapters, and over 60 postgraduate students who have completed their studies under her guidance, Prof Markotter’s impact goes far beyond the lab — her dedication to nurturing the next generation of scientists is inspiring.
