The University of Pretoria (UP) has honoured Dr Carel Oosthuizen with the Teaching Excellence Award for his commitment to education and student development over two decades.
“This award represents more than personal achievement – it validates my dream of building a knowledgeable society through education,” he says. “Working with students has always been my passion, and I’m honoured that the University values this contribution.”
Dr Oosthuizen, who lectures in animal diversity to about 800 students annually, has made a significant impact on UP’s academic landscape since he began his teaching career while pursuing a master’s degree. Having grown up on a farm in Klerksdorp in North West, Dr Oosthuizen’s early years nurtured his profound interest in ecosystems and zoology.
“Growing up surrounded by nature sparked my curiosity about the living world,” he says.
While initially drawn to veterinary sciences, Dr Oosthuizen’s academic journey took a fascinating turn when he discovered the possibility of combining zoology with genetics during his undergraduate studies. This revelation prompted him to pursue honours, master’s and PhD degrees in Genetics at UP. Throughout his postgraduate studies, Dr Oosthuizen served as a tutor and later as a senior tutor, which ignited his passion for education.
“What began as tutoring alongside my studies evolved into a genuine calling,” he recalls. “Witnessing students grasp complex concepts and develop their scientific thinking is profoundly rewarding.”
Since 2014, Dr Oosthuizen has been the cornerstone of the University’s Animal Diversity programme, transforming a challenging module into an engaging exploration of genetic principles and zoological diversity. His innovative teaching methods have earned praise from both colleagues and students.
Beyond his lecturing responsibilities, Dr Oosthuizen has contributed significantly to student welfare through his service at the Department of Student Affairs. He’s also supervised several master's and PhD candidates, many of whom have gone on to make notable contributions to the field of zoology and genetics.
When not immersed in academic pursuits, Dr Oosthuizen finds solace in gardening, perhaps a continuation of his lifelong connection to nature that began on his family farm.
His advice to aspiring students reflects his thoughtful approach to education: “Take time to explore various fields before settling on a career path. Finding the right fit – where your passions align with your abilities – is crucial for long-term fulfilment.”
