Professor Christa Janse van Rensburg has been appointed as the new Director of the Sports Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Institute (SEMLI), effective 1 April. SEMLI, a world-class institute within the Faculty of Health Sciences, is dedicated to advancing research, education, and clinical practice in sports and exercise medicine, injury prevention, and lifestyle interventions. Prof Janse van Rensburg’s appointment marks the beginning of an exciting new era, as she brings decades of expertise and leadership to the role.
Prof Janse van Rensburg has been at the forefront of sports medicine for nearly 26 years, serving as Head of Section Sports Medicine. A qualified rheumatologist with a deep-rooted passion for sports exercise and medicine, she has been instrumental in bridging the gap between clinical practice and cutting-edge research.
Under her leadership, the Sports Medicine Section has evolved into a center of excellence, advancing interdisciplinary collaboration, developing innovative programmes, and producing internationally recognised research. Her mentorship has shaped generations of sports medicine professionals who are now making an impact across the globe.
Her appointment underscores the Faculty of Health Sciences' dedication to advancing sports medicine and lifestyle interventions.
