City of Tshwane and UP Strengthen Security Efforts

Posted on March 13, 2025

The Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, along with the Metro Police, SAPS, Hatfield CID and the University of Pretoria, has committed to addressing crime, public intoxication, drinking in public spaces, noise pollution and other related issues.

Law enforcement authorities have made it clear that arrests will be made as part of their efforts to restore order. This will not only impact the general public but also students who fail to abide by the law. It is critical to understand that any legal violation may result in a criminal record, which could have long-term consequences for your future academic and professional opportunities.

The University is working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure a safer environment, and we urge all students to:

  • Avoid public drinking and disorderly behaviour: Public intoxication and drinking in unauthorised areas will not be tolerated.
  • Respect law enforcement officers: Non-compliance or resistance may lead to serious legal repercussions.
  • Prioritise personal safety: Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid situations that could put you at risk.
  • Do not drink and drive: Driving under the influence is a serious offence that endangers lives and carries severe legal consequences, including arrest, fines and a permanent criminal record. Always arrange for a designated driver or use safe transport options.

We strongly advise all students to act responsibly and ensure they do not place themselves in situations that could lead to legal consequences.
