Sappi TuksRace 2025: Running for community and well-being

Posted on March 04, 2025

The University of Pretoria (UP)’s Sports Department, TuksSport, hosted its annual TuksRace (now known as the Sappi TuksRace) on 15 February 2025 at its Hillcrest Sports Campus. This much-anticipated event brought together participants of all ages and included a 10 km, 21 km and 1 km children’s race, ensuring inclusivity for all!

The race was a huge success and was sold out days in advance. UP staff members and students were able to participate free of charge. UP alumni and the broader public could participate by buying an entry ticket.

“Sport is always a unifier,” said Angelica van Dou, Marketing and Communications Manager at TuksSport. “Ultimately, the Sappi TuksRace and all our sport events provide a platform for the community to come together, work towards a common goal, and celebrate success. The energy and enthusiasm generated by TuksSport have a lasting effect on all people involved, fostering a spirit of collaboration, well-being and unity. The involvement of our alumni helps us maintain a dynamic relationship with those who have been part of the University of Pretoria community. We are able to strengthen bonds, encourage continuous engagement, and promote a thriving, supportive network that benefits anyone linked to our rich heritage as UP.”

Sappi, a global pulp and paper company headquartered in South Africa, became the naming sponsor of the TuksRace in November 2024, for five years. Additional partnerships this year included Typek, a Sappi brand known for its office supplies, including printing paper. The Typek team added a special touch to the event by setting up photo booths for participants and providing water, ice, and cold drinks at their stall.

“This is a huge race that means a lot to the community,” said Heather Carruthers, Customer Manager at Typek. “Upon realising this, we decided to join this year and be a part of it as a way of giving back to the community.” She added that the company’s involvement was further fuelled by its own team members’ passion for sports and community engagement.

“UP is a community player across different spheres, and that includes offering programmes and initiatives that serve the broader community in which we have social licence,” Van Dou added. “When we think of the UP set-up, we serve more than just the demographic that makes up our student population. Through the inclusion of all age groups, we show a holistic approach to community, health, and wellness, where people of all ages are welcomed, supported, and celebrated equally. Sport has no age limit. It’s a clear statement of commitment on the part of the University, to inclusivity and recognising the value of every individual, regardless of their age.”

In addition to UP staff and students, UP alumni also joined in on the fun. “As an alumna of the university, events like these remind me of the fun days I had while completing my undergraduate degree,” said one participant. “They remind me of what it feels like to be part of the Tuks family.”

The event was a testament to the power of community, sport, and the enduring connection between the University of Pretoria and its partners.
