Welcome to the Start of a New Academic Year

Dear UP Students,

A new academic year brings new beginnings, new challenges, and new opportunities. For our first-year students, this is your first experience in a university setting—an exciting but sometimes overwhelming transition. For our senior students, this is another step forward in reaching your academic and personal goals. Whether you are continuing on your journey or taking another shot at a course you didn’t pass last year, know this: your growth is not defined by setbacks, but by how you rise and adapt. Take this as an opportunity to reflect, adjust your strategies, and approach your studies with fresh determination.

If you are a first-year student who registered late and missed the orientation program, don’t worry—you can still catch up by completing the UP Orientation (UPO) module (Please see links below). This will help you navigate campus life, understand the support available, and set you up for success. If you had not do so already, all first years are encouraged to complete the University of Pretoria Readiness Survey (UPRS). The department uses your responses to better provide support most suited to first year student needs.

At the Department of Student Affairs, we are committed to your well-being and success. We encourage you to take advantage of the many support services designed to help you thrive, including:

  • Academic Success Coaches (located in each faculty) to help you develop effective study strategies.
  • Student Counselling Unit for mental health and well-being support.
  • Student Health Services for your medical and wellness needs.
  • Student Nutrition and Academic Progress Programs to assist those facing food insecurity.
  • STARS Mentorship Programme to connect you with experienced students who can guide you.
  • Access, Disability and Inclusion Services (ADIS) for students requiring disability support.

University is not just about academics—it’s also about finding your community. Engage in student life, join clubs and societies, attend events, and make meaningful connections. A strong support system and active social life contribute greatly to your overall well-being and sense of belonging.

Most importantly, make it a priority to attend classes, participate in tutorials, and engage with your lecturers and tutors. The more you invest in your education, the greater your chances of success.
You are not alone on this journey—make use of the resources available and reach out for support when needed. Let’s make this year one of growth, achievement, and community.

Wishing you a fulfilling and successful academic year ahead!
