UP Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Francis Petersen’s visionary roadshow is redefining academic excellence with a human-centred approach.
University of Pretoria (UP) Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Francis Petersen has embarked on a dynamic roadshow across the University, connecting with the campus community and sharing an approach that promises to redefine institutional excellence. Prof Petersen has outlined a comprehensive strategy that positions UP at the forefront of academic innovation.
At the heart of his message is a commitment to being future-focused, with the University's robust infrastructure serving as a cornerstone of potential. Speaking to staff members across various campuses, Prof Petersen articulated a vision that “situates the University’s geographical advantage on African matters” and emphasises UP's potential as a critical academic institution.
With more than 6 000 staff members and 55 000 students, UP represents a powerhouse of potential. Prof Petersen sees this as an opportunity to create meaningful societal change. He emphasises a deeply human-centred approach that goes “the extra mile” in commitment to both staff and students.
Central to his approach is a three-dimensional strategy for delivering the academic project.
“Firstly, executing initiatives through faculties with precision and purpose,” he said. “Secondly, providing comprehensive support to academic endeavours. Thirdly, creating an enabling environment that ensures success for both staff and students.”
The Vice-Chancellor’s vision extends to global recognition, with a specific focus on UP’s research capacity. He is particularly passionate about “leveraging technology with human integration” to drive innovation that serves the broader community, always keeping the human element at the core of technological advancement.
Loyalty, inspiration and a human-centred focus are more than just words for Prof Petersen – they are fundamental principles. He challenges staff to be at the top of their game and encourages students to be inspired in their academic pursuits. The message is clear: education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about creating meaningful change in society through a deeply personal and supportive approach.
A highlight of the roadshow was the question-and-answer session that allowed staff members to directly interact with Prof Petersen. The session provided an open forum for sharing perspectives and understanding the new leadership's vision.
Staff members posed questions about UP’s future and academic strategies. Prof Petersen responded with transparency and depth, demonstrating his commitment to open communication and collaborative leadership. Topics ranged from research opportunities and technological integration to support systems for both academic and support staff.
The roadshow revealed a leader who sees UP’s role as multifaceted. For Prof Petersen, business is the academic project – a dynamic interplay of teaching, learning, research and societal impact. He sees UP not just as an educational institution, but as a transformative force that can shape the future by putting people first.
With an inclusive, future-focused, and human-centred approach, Prof Petersen is setting a new standard for leadership in higher education. His vision goes beyond traditional academic metrics, focusing instead on creating an environment where students and staff can truly aspire and inspire. As UP moves forward under his leadership, it is poised to make significant strides in research, education and societal contribution. Petersen's roadshow has not just introduced a new Vice Chancellor – it has unveiled a new vision for what a modern, human-centred university can achieve.
