Tando Tyakume has been appointed as the new manager of UP’s Career Services. With over a decade of experience in higher education and a deep understanding of student development, she brings passion and expertise to the role.
The University of Pretoria (UP) has announced the appointment of Tando Tyakume as its new Career Services manager. Tyakume, who joined the University in 2019, brings with her over a decade of experience in student career development within the higher education sector.
“This appointment reflects the faith and trust the institution has placed in me,” says Tyakume, who brings a unique perspective as an alumna of UP. “Leading a young and dynamic team is particularly exciting.”
Her previous role focused on operational and project coordination in employer relations, where she strengthened connections between students and potential employers through various initiatives, including graduate recruitment events, career expos and employer presentations.
Tyakume’s journey to this position is characterised by a fascinating shift in career focus. Initially interested in BCom Accounting, she discovered her true passion lay in human development.
“My passion for people led me to pursue a degree in Human Resources,” she says. “I particularly enjoyed psychology.”
Following her Human Resources studies at Nelson Mandela University, she relocated to Pretoria to pursue a BSoc Sci in Industrial Sociology and Labour Studies at UP. Her extensive experience with recruitment agencies has reinforced her commitment to youth development.
“Changing the lives of students is fulfilling,” she says.
Looking ahead, Tyakume plans to expand company participation in career fairs, enhance service offerings and strengthen collaboration with faculties, student bodies and clubs. She aims to streamline both physical and online services while diversifying the department's offerings.
The Career Services Department is one of the most utilised services at UP and continues to play a vital role in bridging the gap between academic achievement and professional success. Tyakume’s leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and enhanced opportunities for students and graduates alike.
