Prof Liz Wolvaardt, programme coordinator of UP’s online Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, tells us how she ensures its success and relevance in the evolving field of public health.
Since the launch of the University of Pretoria’s (UP) fully online Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Public Health in 2020, Professor Liz Wolvaardt has played a pivotal role in shaping the programme. Her team’s commitment extends beyond the curriculum, influencing the professional growth of graduates who go on to make a tangible difference in public health policy and practice. Through the team’s guidance, students are empowered to contribute meaningfully to the sector, driving positive change in their respective communities.
As the programme coordinator for the PGDip in Public Health offered by UP’s Comprehensive Online Education Services, Prof Wolvaardt’s passion and dedication are as powerful as her love for the Ferrari racing team. A proud “Tifosi” (a loyal supporter of the team), she brings the same energy and commitment to her work.
“Running an online programme in public health is like running a Ferrari – both require precision, power, strategic management and a bit of luck to get the best results,” she says about the programme, which under her leadership continues to attract top health professionals.
Among other aspects is the fact that she is passionate about success to make a difference. Much like a finely tuned Ferrari, the success of such a programme depends on several crucial elements working in harmony. At the core of the initiative is a robust learning platform, serving as the engine that drives the programme forward. Just as a Ferrari’s engine must be fast and reliable, the Blackboard learning management system ensures seamless access to lectures, materials and discussions, allowing students to engage with ease from different locations.
While Prof Wolvaardt is at the forefront, she acknowledges the collective effort of UP’s team, which has been instrumental in shaping the programme. However, success in education depends on the ability to make strategic decisions, adapt to challenges and maintain control under pressure.
The ever-changing public health landscape is the road on which this journey unfolds. Policy shifts, global health challenges and emerging research create unpredictable conditions, requiring constant adjustments. The ability to navigate these changes ensures that students receive relevant, up-to-date knowledge.
A strong support team is just as essential as a Formula 1 pit crew. Behind the scenes, instructional designers, information technology experts, module coordinators, tutors and administrative staff at the School of Health Systems and Public Health work tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly. Their dedication ensures that students receive the guidance and technical support they need to succeed. Student engagement serves as the fuel that powers the programme. Keeping learners motivated and connected is key to maintaining momentum, and research efforts continue to explore ways to enhance participation and interaction.
At the end of the race, success is measured by impact. The true victory of an online public health programme lies in the ability of its graduates to address pressing health challenges and drive meaningful change.
“Being part of this journey has been an enriching experience; it’s one that has been shaped by collaboration, innovation and a shared commitment to making a difference in public health,” Prof Wolvaardt says.
