UP strengthens global collaboration with the University of Sussex

In a step towards enhancing global academic partnerships, the University of Pretoria (UP) recently hosted senior management from the University of Sussex, England. This visit builds on an existing relationship between the two institutions. A delegation from Sussex visited UP in November 2023 to explore strategic priorities for collaboration.

This year’s meeting focused on deepening the partnership, with discussions around launching a joint doctoral programme and expanding areas of collaboration in research, teaching and cultural exchange. Professor Themba Mosia, UP’s Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the time, expressed enthusiasm about the growing partnership.

“This collaboration reflects our shared vision of making meaningful and lasting impacts through academic exchange,” he said. “Together, we aim to push the boundaries of research and education, foster innovation and address some of the most pressing challenges faced by both our local and global communities.”

The University of Sussex, which has a 60-year history of engaging with South African institutions, views this partnership as an opportunity to deepen its ties with UP.

“We’ve had students coming from South Africa to the University of Sussex since our inception,” said Prof Robin Banerjee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global and Civic Engagement at the University of Sussex. “This partnership allows us to build on our faculty collaborations, and broaden opportunities for students and staff to connect through education and research. There are many synergies between our institutions, particularly in terms of community impact. Both universities are committed to using teaching and research to address local and global challenges, making a tangible difference to the communities we serve.”

This growing collaboration with the University of Sussex is one of several international partnerships that UP has pursued in recent years. As a leading research-intensive university in Africa, it consistently seeks partnerships with institutions that share its commitment to high-impact research and innovation, further reinforcing its position as a globally connected institution working to address complex challenges.
