Prof. Trevor Nyakudya, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Pretoria, has been appointed to two roles within the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS). He will serve as co-chair of the IUPS Teaching Workshop Publicity Committee and as a member of the Steering Committee for the upcoming IUPS conference, which will take place in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2025.

In his role as co-chair of the IUPS Teaching Workshop Publicity Committee, Prof. Nyakudya will be responsible for promoting and driving global engagement for the series of educational workshops leading up to and during the conference. These workshops aim to bring together physiology educators and researchers from around the world to explore innovative developments in the teaching of physiology. His efforts will ensure active participation from physiology educators globally and especially at the upcoming IUPS conference in Germany.

Additionally, his membership on the IUPS Steering Committee will see him contributing to the planning and decision-making processes that shape these workshops. The committee will focus on addressing the needs of the international physiology education community, ensuring the workshops provide relevant and impactful content.

“I am deeply honoured to take on these roles,” said Prof. Nyakudya. “Engaging the global scientific and physiology educational community is crucial for advancing our understanding of physiology. I look forward to contributing to the success of the 2025 IUPS conference and its workshops.”

Prof. Nyakudya’s new roles build on his long-standing involvement with the IUPS, including his work with the IUPS Education Committee and the African Mentorship Taskforce. His ongoing commitment to advancing physiology education and mentorship, particularly in Africa, aligns closely with the IUPS’s mission to foster global collaboration in health science education.

Prof. Nyakudya’s leadership within the IUPS not only reflects his dedication to the field but also brings international recognition to the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. His role in shaping the IUPS Teaching Workshops directly contributes to the faculty’s mission of advancing health science education through global partnerships and collaborative leadership.

In addition to his leadership in physiology education, Prof. Nyakudya’s research focuses on metabolic dysfunction and the therapeutic potential of phytomedicines. He has been actively involved in mentoring young scientists across Africa, furthering the University of Pretoria’s commitment to educational excellence and leadership in the health sciences.

Prof. Nyakudya’s involvement with the IUPS will continue to benefit both the global physiology community and the University of Pretoria’s academic environment, fostering growth, innovation, and collaboration.
