“Obtaining my PhD in Business Management from the University of Pretoria (UP) has played a pivotal role in shaping both my academic and professional journey,” says Dr Hangwani Ravhudzulo, who recently graduated during this year’s spring graduation ceremonies. “The rigorous demands of pursuing a PhD honed my intellectual curiosity, and deepened my passion for contributing to scientific knowledge and human development.”
Dr Ravhudzulo is a Director of Public Sector Business at Microsoft South Africa, overseeing the provincial, coastal, state-owned, public safety, national security, justice, crime prevention, defence and intelligence portfolio.
His research centred on employee engagement, telecommuting and performance in the context of the future of work, particularly within South Africa’s information and communications technology sector.
“My thesis provides both theoretical and practical contributions, offering valuable insights for managers, human resources professionals and policymakers on navigating the evolving landscape of work, especially in the post-pandemic context,” he explains.
He aims to publish articles in journals and venture into academia in future.
“I have published two internationally peer-reviewed articles, with more on the way,” Dr Ravhudzulo says. “Academia is exhilarating! I aim to explore opportunities in academia where I can leverage my expertise and experience to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in my field. I am interested in engaging in research that addresses critical issues and fosters innovation, while also focusing on teaching and mentoring students to inspire and develop the next generation of scholars.”
He says the doctoral experience taught him to navigate complex challenges with resilience and adaptability.
“My days were filled with extensive research, writing and data analysis, often under less-than-ideal circumstances or during brief moments in transit as the ideas came,” Dr Ravhudzulo explains. “The process demanded unwavering dedication, with many hours devoted to my studies; after work in the evenings and at weekends. This challenging journey not only strengthened my academic abilities but also instilled in me a capacity to perform under pressure, think critically and maintain focus, despite the unexpected twists and turns. The experience was transformative, allowing me to develop a unique perspective and skill-set that distinguishes me in my field.”
Dr Ravhudzulo attributes the success of his PhD journey to his wife and daughters for their support throughout the process.
“When I received the news in July that I had passed my PhD, the time between then and the upcoming graduation in September felt like one of the longest waits of my life,” he recalls. “The first person I shared the news with was my wife, Sarah. Her support went beyond what traditional acknowledgment and gratitude deserve. My daughters – Muanza-Zwivhuya, Mulondi and Ondwela – also received the news, and I reflected on how their curiosity, humour and insistence on making time for family helped me avoid burnout, making my PhD journey truly meaningful. I am grateful for their understanding and patience, especially when I had to prioritise my studies.”
Being the scholar that he is, Dr Ravhudzulo says education is the foundation upon which we build our futures.
“It is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about expanding our horizons, challenging our perspectives and growing into the best versions of ourselves. My philosophy is that there is always more to learn. I believe that through education, we acquire the tools to transform our lives and the lives of those around us.”
For Dr Ravhudzulo, being a UP ambassador means that he and other fellow graduates are responsible for representing the institution’s values, achievements and reputation in various professional and social circles.
“By engaging with the University, whether through mentorship, networking or financial contributions, alumni can directly influence the enhancement of academic programmes, infrastructure and student support services.”
