UP’s Information Technology Services is preparing to roll out an endpoint encryption tool called Microsoft BitLocker. Here is more information about what to expect from the roll-out.
The University of Pretoria (UP) is committed to continuously improving the security of its information and data. As part of this effort, the Information Technology Services (ITS) department is currently rolling out an endpoint encryption tool called Microsoft BitLocker. This tool will enable encryption on all UP-owned devices, providing an extra layer of protection for sensitive data.
What to expect during the roll-out
The deployment of this encryption tool will be conducted in phases across various faculties and departments. Some units have already received detailed emails outlining what to expect and the steps required to complete the installation. You will receive a notification when your faculty or department is scheduled for installation.
Data protection is a key features of encryption. The encryption will secure data on all endpoints, safeguarding personal information, research data and other sensitive material against potential threats like theft or the improper disposal of devices.
What encryption won’t do
How the roll-out will work
Each faculty or department will be contacted individually by ITS and provided with an installation guide. The set-up process is straightforward and should take about five minutes. The ITS Helpdesk (x813051) will be available to assist with any challenges that may arise.
Once installed, BitLocker will begin encrypting all data on your device and will generate a unique decryption key. This key will be securely stored in the cloud. If your device is damaged and data retrieval is necessary, the decryption key can be obtained through the IT Helpdesk, which will facilitate access to your data.
Stay informed and prepared
Please keep an eye out for an email from ITS indicating when the BitLocker Encryption will be deployed to your faculty or department. Be sure to follow the instructions provided in the email and the installation guide to ensure a smooth process.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping to protect UP’s most valuable assets, particularly our data. Your participation in this roll-out is vital to ensuring the security and integrity of the University’s data.
Frequently asked questions:
Q: Do I need to re-encrypt new data added to my device?
A: No – all new data will be automatically encrypted on the hard drive.
Q: Can I retrieve my data from the cloud if my device is stolen or lost?
A: No – only the decryption key is stored in the cloud, not the data. Regular backups are essential.
Q: Will data be encrypted if transferred to an external device or cloud storage?
A: No – only data stored on the device’s hard drive is encrypted.
Q: Does this apply to Apple Mac devices?
A: Yes – Apple Mac devices will also be encrypted.
Q: What about desktop PCs?
A: This depends on the hardware. Newer desktops with 8th generation Intel CPUs or newer will support encryption. If unsure, please consult the ITS Helpdesk:
