More than 2000 students set to receive qualifications at UP Spring Graduation

Posted on September 02, 2024

The University of Pretoria (UP) will confer 2 162 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees during the Spring Graduation ceremonies from 2 to 6 September at its Hatfield Campus. Notably, at least 26.3% of the graduates received funding through the University’s donor-funded initiatives.

As in previous years, the campus lawns, restaurants and resting areas are expected to be bustling with the celebratory presence of thousands of parents, guardians, donors and members of the media attending the ceremonies.

A total of 149 doctoral degrees, 505 master’s degrees, 465 honours degrees, 376 bachelor’s degrees, 496 postgraduate diplomas and 171 advanced certificates will be conferred.

“Spring Graduation is always a special time for the UP family,” said Professor Themba Mosia, Interim UP Vice-Chancellor and Principal. “During this time we celebrate the hard work, dedication and achievements of our hardworking students. This is a significant milestone not just for them but for their families and the communities they will go on to serve. The vibrant atmosphere on campus, filled with the joy of our graduates and the pride of their loved ones, is a testament to the importance of this moment in their academic and personal journeys.

“I am particularly pleased to note that more than a quarter of our graduates were supported through the University’s donor-funded initiatives. This underscores the crucial role that our donors play in enabling access to higher education for talented individuals who might otherwise be unable to pursue their academic goals. As we continue to foster excellence and innovation, we remain committed to ensuring that every deserving student has the opportunity to succeed at UP.”

Honorary doctorates

The Faculty of Humanities will confer an honorary doctorate on one of South Africa’s most prolific writers and academics, Antjie Krog, while the Faculty of Education will confer one on renowned higher education expert Professor Jane Knight.

“These distinguished individuals have made significant contributions to their respective fields, shaping both the academic landscape and broader societal understanding,” Prof Mosia said. “Krog’s powerful literary work has given voice to complex social issues in South Africa, while Prof Knight’s research has profoundly influenced international higher education policies. Their recognition underscores UP’s commitment to honouring excellence and impactful scholarship.”
