About the course

The Advanced Human Rights Course on Data Protection in Africa is hosted by the Expression, Information and Digital Rights (EIDR) Unit of the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. This course is aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of diverse facets of data protection and how to integrate them effectively within the African context. The course is also designed to equip data protection advocates with practical insights into emerging trends of data protection in Africa. The course will be taught by leading experts in the field from across Africa.

Course content

The Course focuses on specific issues that intersect with data protection including: 

  • Concepts and clarification of terms in data protection
  • International and regional frameworks
  • Digital trade
  • Data protection impact assessment
  • Digital IDs
  • Oversight mechanisms
  • Cross-border data flows
  • Access to remedy
  • Data Protection Agencies (DPAs)
  • Generative artificial intelligence
  • Data Protection in Electoral Processes
  • Data Protection in Labour Rights and Employment Practices
  • Data Protection from a Gender Perspective
  • Children and Data Protection 

Participation is limited to 30-40 persons with a focus on participants from various African countries. Participation is drawn from civil society organisations, policymakers, academia, grassroots advocates, private sector actors and others. Certificates will be presented to the participants ONLY after they have fully participated in all the sessions in the Course.
