Meet Nicole van der Walt, a 22-year-old trailblazer making waves in student leadership at the University of Pretoria (UP). The final-year LLB student has taken on the challenging dual role of secretary and culture officer of UP’s Temporary Student Committee (TSC). In this position, she’s not just participating in student governance – she’s revolutionising it.
One of her most impactful achievements has been her work in student financial aid. Recognising the struggle that many students face with registration fees, Van der Walt took the initiative and reached out to the Motsepe Foundation. Her efforts paid off, securing a donation that, combined with the TSC's Study Aid Fund, has enabled several students to register and continue their studies. This accomplishment alone has changed the trajectory of many young lives, opening doors that might otherwise have remained closed.
“Serving students and leadership is one of my biggest passions," Van der Walt says. “While I still have the opportunity to do what I love, I should take it, no matter the cost.”
Van der Walt and her committee became the first TSC/SRC to host their own stall at the RAG of Hope Day. This innovative approach to fundraising raised money for students in need.
Recognising the importance of mental health, especially during high-stress periods like exam season, Van der Walt has worked closely with Fly@UP to implement initiatives to improve mental health support on campus. The Save the Semester campaign is a testament to her commitment to student well-being, a critical need often overlooked in academic settings.
Van der Walt’s innovative spirit shines through in her conception of the Tuks Timetable App. This official UP timetable app, which is still in development, promises to streamline students’ academic planning by consolidating timetables, semester tests and exam dates into one platform. It's a practical solution to a common student challenge.
In her role as culture officer, Van der Walt has made significant strides in promoting diversity and inclusion. She's orchestrated cultural events that create safe spaces for under-represented groups, fostering a more inclusive campus environment. This work is crucial in building a university community where all students feel valued and represented.
Her commitment to transparency and communication is evident in her consistent and timely distribution of minutes and information to the student body. This may seem like a small detail, but it's crucial for maintaining trust and engagement in student governance.
As we reflect on these achievements, it's clear that Van der Walt embodies the spirit of Women's Month. She's not just participating in the system – she's actively reshaping it to better serve students.
