UP Sports Medicine alumni appointed to SA medical team at the 2024 Olympics

Section Sports Medicine at the University of Pretoria is proud to announce that several of its distinguished alumni from the Sports Medicine Section have been appointed to the South African medical team for the 2024 Olympics in France. This esteemed group of professionals will be instrumental in supporting the nation's athletes at this prestigious global event.

Dr Jean de Wilde

Leading the team as Chief Medical Officer is Dr Jean de Wilde, whose expertise and dedication have earned him this pivotal role. Joining him are Dr Thulani Ngwenya, Dr. Phatho Zondo, and Dr Chanel Van Vreden, the latter of whom will be graduating with an MSc in Sports Medicine in September 2024.

Their appointment underscores the high calibre of training and education provided by our institution. Also part of the team are Dr. Carollete, who holds a PhD in Sports Medicine from the University of Pretoria, and Dr. Gavin Shang (a PhD Sports Medicine candidate). Their ongoing commitment to advancing sports medicine research and practice exemplifies the excellence and impact of our alumni on a global stage.

Prof. Christa Janse van Rensburg, the HoD of Section Sports Medicine, extends her heartfelt congratulations: "We are thrilled to see our alumni and current students contributing to the success of our national team at the 2024 Olympics. Their dedication and hard work are a testament to the high standards of our Sports Medicine program. This year is especially significant as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our department.
