Nelson Mandela International Day, which is celebrated on 18 July, honours Nelson Mandela’s legacy through community service and acts of kindness. In this spirit, the University of Pretoria (UP) designates July as a month of giving, during which it engages in initiatives to inspire change and have a positive impact on its students by organising donations of clothes, food and other essentials.

Donations are vital for students, especially those who face financial challenges. This support can be life-changing, giving students the resources they need to succeed academically and thrive personally.

“By consistently taking action to support our student community, we aim to make a meaningful impact on their lives,” Dr Kgadi Mathabathe, Director of Student Affairs at UP. “Donations of clothing, canned food and other necessities play a crucial role in reducing the financial burden for our students, enabling them to concentrate on their education and personal growth. Giving not only empowers the recipients but also enriches the givers. When students are well physically, mentally and emotionally, they are empowered to thrive. The generosity modelled by our staff promotes a culture of paying it forward, creating an engaged, supportive community among both staff and students.”

Donation campaigns benefit not only the recipients but also the donors. The act of giving creates a ripple effect of kindness and generosity, encouraging others to contribute and participate in making a positive impact. Supporting UP’s initiatives offers donors the chance to be part of a significant movement that empowers students, and promotes a culture of care and support within the university community.

“Giving is a privilege!” says Hestie Byles, manager of the Fly@UP campaign. “In celebration of Mandela Day, we are striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students. Our previous Thrift Store saw more than 600 students shop for free. We gave away over 6 000 items of clothing on the day – all of which were donations that came from UP staff and students. We celebrate the fact that some of our students wrote exams in ‘new’ warm clothes and the difference that would make in that person’s life. These contributions bring smiles to their faces, and foster a sense of community and solidarity within our university community.”
