Interim VC’s Mandela Day Call for Action: Join UP Giving Day to help make education accessible

Posted on July 18, 2024

As we approach a pivotal moment in our university's journey, I am filled with both pride and optimism that, together, we are set to exceed the target we set for ourselves to make a positive difference in the lives of our deserving students. On 22 July, we will come together for the third annual University of Pretoria (UP) Giving Day, which forms part of our larger Giving Matters campaign and embodies our commitment to inclusivity and excellence in higher education.

This year, our goal is ambitious yet paramount: to hit the R100 million mark for donations to the Giving Matters campaign, meeting our target set in 2022. We remain steadfast in our determination to support students who experience hardships that are an impediment to their academic success.

I am proud to highlight that the UP Giving Matters campaign has already raised at least R80 million and provided financial support to more than 400 students. Outside of this campaign, UP provided financial support to more than 50% of the graduates at the recent April-May graduations. This same feat was achieved with the graduates of September 2023, another demonstration of our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.

Our efforts are not only about raising funds, but about making a tangible impact by producing future leaders in the numerous fields of specialisation that our country, continent and world need. The University of Pretoria firmly believes that quality education is the cornerstone of empowerment and transformation, and a sine qua non (essential condition) for successful student learning.

By contributing to UP Giving Day, you are directly enabling students to pursue their dreams, regardless of their financial background.

As part of our campaign, we are pleased to announce the launch of a raffle featuring a classic 1967 Beetle as the grand prize. This iconic car, previously owned by former UP Rector Professor Casper Rautenbach, was generously donated to UP by his family following his passing. Money raised through the raffle will be directed towards scholarships and financial aid programmes, in alignment with UP’s ongoing efforts to address student financial needs and promote educational access.

In the spirit of Mandela Day on 18 July, which encourages individuals to devote 67 minutes to charitable endeavours or community service, we invite everyone to participate in the raffle. For a modest contribution of just R67 per ticket, the public can support a noble cause and have the opportunity to win this iconic car.

To our global donors: Your generosity is invaluable. Your contributions not only fund scholarships but also create opportunities that impact generations. Whether you are an alumnus, a friend of the University, or a corporate partner, your support shapes future leaders who will drive innovation and progress in South Africa and beyond.

To our students: Your determination and commitment inspire us daily. We are here to support you on your exciting journey, and UP Giving Day is a testament to our unshakeable belief in your potential. Your education is an investment in our shared future, and your success is our greatest reward.

Thank you for your unwavering support and belief in the transformative power of education. Let us seize this opportunity to make a meaningful impact and demonstrate the spirit of Ubuntu that defines our University of Pretoria community.

Each donation, whether R10, R50 or R100, makes a significant difference. Your support, regardless of the amount, is deeply valued, and has a profound collective impact.
