Letsebe Mahlotsa, a senior business analyst in the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration (DESA) at the University of Pretoria (UP), has played a pivotal role as both player and coach in the development and success of the University’s staff soccer team. With a passion for sport and a commitment to holistic development, Mahlotsa has been instrumental in transforming the team into a symbol of unity and community spirit.
“Joining UP provided me with the perfect platform to contribute to the vibrant sports culture here while pursuing my career goals in higher education,” he says.
Mahlotsa has been at UP for eight years, and his involvement in various initiatives that promote academic excellence, physical well-being and community spirit among staff members has been a cornerstone of his career.
Over the years, the soccer team has made remarkable progress, with a growing number of participants and memorable victories in local tournaments. Established in 2017 and comprising 40 players across all UP campuses, the team has made a significant impact on the culture and community spirit at UP.
Mahlotsa’s motivation to play and coach the soccer team stemmed from a desire to foster solidarity and promote a healthy lifestyle among university staff members.
“Soccer has a unique ability to unite people, regardless of their backgrounds or roles within the institution,” he says. “I saw coaching and playing soccer as an opportunity to contribute positively to the university community while nurturing a passion for sport among my colleagues.”
However, playing and coaching the team comes with challenges, such as balancing different staff schedules and accommodating varying levels of skill. Despite these difficulties, the coach finds the experience immensely rewarding.
“The most rewarding aspect is witnessing the team’s growth and seeing individuals bond over their shared enthusiasm for the sport,” Mahlotsa says. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to create a supportive environment where colleagues can unwind, connect and stay physically active.”
By promoting a healthy work-life balance and encouraging cross-departmental interaction, the team has contributed to a positive organisational culture built on teamwork, resilience and mutual support.
Mahlotsa aims to expand the team’s outreach and integrate it further into university-wide events. These long-term goals include establishing structured leagues and enhancing training facilities to accommodate growing interest.
“Staff members can look forward to exciting tournaments and community engagement initiatives that showcase our team's spirit and dedication,” he says.
The team is open to all UP staff members who share a passion for soccer and a commitment to regular participation. Interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to Mahlotsa.
Support from DESA and the Department of Institutional Advancement has been vital. The team also seeks additional support in the form of playing kits, flexible facility slots, transport and other resources to enhance participation during tournaments and realise their long-term goals.
