Youth Month: A message from the Transformation Office

Posted on June 28, 2024

Youth Month is important because it recognises and celebrates young people’s contributions to society while addressing the unique challenges they face. It is an opportunity to promote positive development and encourage civic engagement, and highlights issues such as education, mental health and employment which have a significant impact on youth. By raising awareness, society can better support young people to achieve their potential, fostering a generation of empowered, informed, responsible citizens who can drive positive change in their communities and beyond.

With Youth Month coming to an end, it is important to reflect on the state of young people in 2024. I can’t help but feel scared for my future and that of my peers and younger siblings. The COVID-19 pandemic was just yesterday; we have entered unchartered political territory; and we’re faced with a staggering youth unemployment rate. It is easy to feel dejected and not that different to our counterpart class of 1976. Yet in reality, we have come quite far and have been afforded many opportunities. As we continue to strive for more freedom, let us remember that we are our own best asset and that our power is realised when we are united and diverse.

The University of Pretoria’s Transformation Office is championing the theme ‘Connected communities’ this year as we believe that diverse and connected communities are safer, more inclusive and more innovative. The recognition and appreciation of all forms of diversity among people allow vulnerability and, consequently, connectedness to thrive.

As young people, it is in our interests to champion this principle as we are only a stone's throw away from oppression based on difference. We need to protect our right to self-identify as a young, queer, racially diverse, class-diverse and religiously diverse generation. We also cannot ignore the responsibilities that we have to take care of one another, especially as a diverse cohort. Even though diversity does sometimes present cohesion challenges, it is important to present a united and connected front.
