Institutional culture is the collective, mutually forming patterns of norms, values, practices, beliefs and presumptions that shape the behaviour of individuals and groups in higher education, and offers a framework for interpreting the significance of incidents and acts.

Increasing the diversity of students is not enough to transform institutional culture; a fundamental change in procedures, rules and beliefs is needed. Diversity and inclusion must be given top priority by the student leadership, which should also establish clear objectives and checkpoints. This entails fostering inclusive teaching methods, updating curricula to reflect a range of viewpoints and establishing avenues where all views can be heard.

Advocacy groups and student organisations are also essential in promoting cultural change from the bottom up. Youth diversity plays a critical role in changing the institutional ethos of South African universities. Universities may move past the effects of apartheid and create inclusive, equitable and dynamic learning environments by embracing and fostering diversity. The next generation of leaders who will work to create a society that is more unified and just must be raised via this change. South African institutions have the potential to become genuine leaders in diversity and inclusion with persistent dedication and effort.

Moreover, diversity among young people offers a multitude of viewpoints that might enhance university social and intellectual experiences. Unique perspectives from students from different backgrounds enrich class discussions, research initiatives and extracurricular activities. This variety of viewpoints fosters creativity and critical thinking, two qualities that are crucial to academic success. Contact between a diverse range of students promotes respect and understanding among them, enabling youth to participate positively in a multicultural society.

A diverse and welcoming campus community benefits not just individual students but also the larger community. Graduates are more suited to contribute to a united and just country if they have learnt to navigate and value diversity.
