Anti-Corruption Coalition seeking to hire a Junior Researcher (3-6 months contract)

Posted on May 16, 2024

The Anti-Corruption Coalition (ACC) is an initiative established in the Centre for Business Ethics (CfBE) at the Gordon Institute of Business Science. Its purpose is to develop a comprehensive database on corruption and corrupt activities (in South Africa in the first instance, but with the possibility of extending beyond our borders), conduct analyses on the data to identify corruption trends, patterns and networks, augment and support those analyses with additional research, prepare reports on the findings and make those available to various stakeholders to inform anti-corruption action.

Data will be sourced from various sources including the media, reports produced by Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), academic research, Factiva, CIPC, Government white papers, hopefully National Treasury data like the restricted supplier database and procurement data, and others that we may identify as we engage with the work.

We are seeking the services of a contract Junior Researcher.  The appointment would be for a short-term contract in the first instance (three to six months). While we would prefer to make a full-time appointment, we are willing to discuss a part-time arrangement.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the ACC Senior Researcher to:
    • Frame research questions and direct research and analytic activities to contribute to the achievement of the ACC’s objectives.
    • Identify and access sources of relevant data.
    • If necessary, conduct further research (which may be in the form of interviews, desktop research etc) to enhance the analytic output.
    • Assist with the interpretation of the analyses to direct further data collection and research that may be required.
  • Responsible for writing/co-writing reports, white papers, policy advice or commentaries reflecting the findings, or preliminary findings of the analyses and research. These may be theme-based (e.g. trends in assassinations) or broad (e.g. how the failure of governance contributes to corruption).

Qualifications, experience and skills required:

  • Masters degree in an appropriate discipline.
  • Knowledge or experience of the good governance and/or anti-corruption field locally.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable research competence (e.g. publications, previous experience)
  • The ability to produce high-quality written reports in English.
  • Previous experience as a lecturer/researcher in an academic institution or similar would be an advantage.

Please submit your application and CV by 30 May 2024 to: Dr Wendy Orr, Programme Director: Anti-Corruption Coalition, via email [email protected]
