Update on Hatfield campus activity

Posted on February 21, 2024

Due to the ongoing strike by workers from NEHAWU and UPWO, coupled with the illegal obstruction of entrances to the University of Pretoria's Hatfield Campus, University management has made the difficult decision to temporarily move some classes online. This decision only affects classes usually presented at the Hatfield Campus and the faculties based there.

Please be aware that access to campus may be restricted due to the strike, but we are making every effort to ensure access and the safety of our staff and students. If you have any questions or concerns regarding safety on campus, please call the emergency number on the back of your staff or student card.

Communication regarding the impact on specific classes will be sent to students via ClickUP. Therefore, it is crucial for all students to keep a close eye on ClickUP for further information and updates. It is important to note that not all classes will be affected, and classes on other campuses and faculties will continue as normal. Students who are unsure or require more information are asked to please contact their Faculty Dean’s office by sending an email to the faculty email address as listed on the UP website.

While we regret the necessity of this decision, it is in the interest of the safety of all our students and staff. Students facing connectivity or computer equipment issues are encouraged to utilise the library or computer laboratories on the Hatfield or other campuses.

For students who have not yet finalised their registration, you can do so online. Even if you cannot hand in your contracts, you will still be allowed to finalise your registration. For any staff members who are required to come to campus, please be assured that the Hatfield Campus will remain open and that we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure your safety and well-being. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and assure you that we are committed to returning to contact classes on the Hatfield Campus as soon as possible.

The University remains dedicated to working with unions to find a solution, and urges the unions to refrain from illegal acts and to protest within the confines of the law.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this challenging time.

Please continue to monitor your email and official communication channels for any further updates.
